Inquiry: An inquiry into Global Warming and the difference we can make.

Form:What is Global warming?

Global warming is when too many of the sun's rays hit earth which causes the Earth to warm up.The main impact
of this happening is the ice melting which leads to high water levels. The water levels cause floods, tsunamis and small, low islands to sink down,Another major terror is climate change in the atmosphere. The reason climate change is more harmful now than ever is because the Ozone layer is depleting. The ozone layer is an invisible forcefield in the atmosphere which protects the earth from UV rays. The reason the ozone is depleting is because of the pollution we release in to the atmosphere everyday, in other words CO2 (the air) trees turn into oxygen. The ozone is not only getting destroyed because of CO2 but also chemicals. Some ways CO2 is released are means of transportation, factories and green house gases.Green house gases trap UV rays in the atmosphere which keeps the Earth warm but when there's too much released a lot is bounced back into Earth. Some natural causes created by nature is methane from arctic tundra, cows and wetlands.Man-made causes cause the most problems in global warming. There are many man-made causes such as burning up fossil fuels.Fossil fuels are made from the trees that were buried under the ground a long time ago. Some fossil fuels are coal and oil and gas. So,it is made of CO2. We burn fossil fuels for cars and in factories to make them into electricity, petrol and sometimes for generating heat.Population is also effecting global warming by more methods of transport.

Function :How does global warming effect life on earth?

Global warming is the greatest threat to life on Earth in all of human history. The Earth is warming way too beyond what many species can handle, changing the habitats, lessening food sources, causing drought and extinction-able weather events, and can even immediately wipe out an entire species because of the heat. In fact, scientists predict that if we keep the same level of our current greenhouse gas admissions, climate change will wipeout more than 1/3 of Earth’s animal and plant life to face extinction by 2050- and up to 70% by 2100. It would badly impact the ecosystems and make it hard for mankind societies worldwide.Australia is a place which gets effected by global warming.Australia gets lots of wild fires and droughts have begun to get worse due to global warming. The great barrier reef is getting bleached, but only 0.1% of the worlds oceans have corals but over 50% of the fish live in those reefs. The average number of deaths by heat waves in Australia is 1,100 people which stands to only increase.Australia's marine life is already migrating to cooler waters,to escape the warming in their habitat, forcing fish to travel further for their catch.Singapore, as you know doesn't get effected much or does it?The rain will come harder down and we may have a poison fogging of air.If you breath that air you will get sick.Lots of infectious diseases will pop up and will cause lots of deaths. The worst part is,if the water level rises Singapore will go down underwater. But Singapore is taking precaution and building a wall as it is so small. But big countries can't do that.So we need to think about different solutions or prevent it from happening by taking action like the 3 R's Reduce, Re-use and Recycle.

Causation:What are the causes and effects of global warming?

Retreat of glaciers causing worldwide sea level rise is one of the major effects of global warming. It is predicted that the sea level rise in coming century is somewhere between 0.18m and 0.59m. Changes in rainfall patterns, high frequent occurring of extreme weather conditions, scarcity of drinking water, depreciation of ozone layer, ocean acidification and spread of some diseases are some of other adverse effects of global warming. Therefore it is obvious that we should be united to prevent this danger.(Diagram)
Burning fossil fuels is one thing that causes pollution. Fossil fuels are fuels made of organic matter such as coal, or oil. When fossil fuels are burned they give off a green house gas called CO2.

Change:How is Global warming changing?

Global warming has been happening for a long time but it was never founded until the 1900.In mid way of the 20th century global warming began as a threat. The Ozone layer began to weaken and the sun started to become a terror.Humans started polluting the world at a rapid rate by using mechanical items and released tons of CO2 daily.Too much sunlight entered the Earth's atmosphere and this started all sorts of terrible things such as skin cancer(By skin taking in too much sunlight ),floods and tsunamis by ice melting and water levels rising and all sorts of other things including wildfires and a change in the Earth's temperature, hot and cold.Global warming causes natural disasters.Global warming kills millions of people every year.Right now global warming is going double the rate since then and people estimate that it might sink islands in the next 30-50 years.Right now the hole in the ozone is 3 times the USA and is affecting Austrailia a lot.Somethings that are releasing tons of CO2 in the air are greenhouse gases and transport. Scientists say the world will go up 5degrees in the next 50 years.Global warming just does not effect land but also the oceans.Coral reefs take years to form and when the sunlight is too strong the coral reef die and only 0.2% of the Earth's water has coral reefs but 1/4 of all fish live in the reefs so they will die. There won't be enough food for sea animals and the whole cycle will go hazardous.

Perspective:What are the points of view towards global warming?

There are different points of view towards global warming such as two people might think completely different aspects like
P1:Global warming is such a positive thing and is making the weather so pleasant, why does anyone want to do something about it.
P2:Global warming is such a terrible thing and it makes the temperature so un-livable for humans and animals, how can I take more action to stop it.
P1 has completely blocked his/her mind of all the bad things that could happen. If this person thinks carfully all the persons paradise could turn into deserts. The person is thinking about making freezing cold climates more humid and make humid climates a little more cold. But if we do not take action the cold places could not just turn a BIT more humid but into a desert! P2 will always have an argument.P1 says “The plants will be happier with more co2.CO2 is like food for the plants they can only take so much in at the same rate leaving extra CO2 which goes up in the air and destroys the ozone.
Some people are not even aware of what global warming is doing like P3
P3:Global warming is harmless to anyone and anything.
This is why you have to make people aware of what will happen to earth if people don’t stop global warming.Almost about 47% of people think global warming is positive and 53% think it is bad.
People around the world have different points of view towards global warming and it is your job to inform your friends of what is happening around the world.
Climate change is a serious public health threat facing the world, but some people are not aware of how it can affect them. Those that are most sensitive are children. Because they are the least immune to any diseases but the ones that even professionals can't cure would be able to kill them in seconds.
Former Vice President Al Gore, in an opinion piece for Salon.com in 2005:
"The science is extremely clear: Global warming may not affect the frequency of hurricanes, but it makes the average hurricane stronger, magnifying its destructive power. In the years ahead, there will be more storms like Katrina, unless we change course. Indeed, we have had two more Category 5 storms since Katrina—including Wilma, which before landfall was the strongest hurricane ever measured in the Atlantic.
"This summer, more than 200 cities in the United States broke all-time heat records.
"This summer, parts of India received record rainfall—37 inches fell in Mumbai in 24 hours, killing more than 1,000 people. The new extremes of wind and rain are part of a larger pattern that also includes rapidly melting glaciers worldwide, increasing desertification, a global extinction problem, and a growing range for disease 'vectors' (Vector means like mosquitoes, ticks and many other carriers of viruses and bacteria harmful to people."

Responsibility:What is our responsibility towards global warming

Our responsibilities
One of our responsibilities towards global warming is to stop using chlorofluorocarbons-A chemical that destroys the ozone layer and is put in the aircon. The chemical was invented in 1928.The ozone layer is the shield that protects earth from dangerous sun rays.Global warming are effected by Greenhouse gases.Green house gases keep CO2 in the atmosphere when it is supposed to go back in space. To clean up the environment by doing small things like the 3 R's and picking up trash from the ground and not throw away food if you don't like it don't buy it and if you do well then recycle the packaging and make a compost so if you have a garden then you get free and fresh fertilizer.

The government responsibilities
The USA is increasing energy independence .WWF is working ways to grow sustainable crops, generating energy and dealing with waste.WWF cannot achive their goals alone and are in strong partnership with governments and organizations. Government must play a central role to tackle the climate crisis. WWF is an supporter which does just about anything to help stop climate change. In the USA WWF works to advance policies that reduce carbon pollution ,support clean energy technologies, prepare for the effects of climate change and curb deforestation. In the US, WWF works to advance policies that reduce carbon.
